From Scarcity to Abundance – Shifting Your Mindset Like the Israelites
Have you ever found yourself looking at a situation and only seeing what’s missing? It’s easy to fall into the habit of scarcity thinking, focusing on lack, limits, and fear. But what if God is calling you to a higher way of thinking? A shift from the wilderness mindset to Promised Land living? In the Bible, the Israelites’ journey from Egypt through the wilderness to the Promised Land offers more than just historical insight, it’s a mirror of the journey many of us must take internally. It’s not just about moving from one location to another, but about moving from scarcity to abundance – in mindset, in faith, and in life.
Wilderness Thinking: The Scarcity Trap
In Exodus and Numbers, we see the Israelites freshly delivered from slavery in Egypt. But not long into their journey, their songs of freedom turned into grumblings of lack.
“If only we had died in Egypt!… We remember the fish we ate in Egypt at no cost—also the cucumbers, melons, leeks, onions and garlic.” – Numbers 11:5
Despite God providing manna daily, their focus was on what they didn’t have, meat, variety, comfort. This is the essence of a scarcity mindset: even when God is providing, we fixate on what’s missing. We see the cup as half empty, ignoring the miracle that the cup exists at all!
Scarcity thinking breeds complaints, fear, and stagnation. It keeps us in the wilderness even when the Promised Land is just around the corner.
Promised Land Thinking: The Abundance Mindset
When Joshua and Caleb scouted the Promised Land, they saw the same giants, the same fortified cities, the same challenges as the other spies, but their mindset was radically different.
“We should go up and take possession of the land, for we can certainly do it.” – Numbers 13:30
While the other spies said, “We seemed like grasshoppers in our own eyes,” Joshua and Caleb chose to believe in God’s promise over their perception. That is abundance thinking. It doesn’t deny the presence of challenges, it simply refuses to let fear have the final say.
Abundance thinking sees the cup as half full, and trusts God to fill it to overflowing.
Making the Shift Today
Many people live in mental “wildernesses” – scarcity thinking, fear of not having enough, comparison, anxiety about the future. But the message of the Promised Land is that God has more in store. The shift begins with how we see:
- Instead of “I don’t have enough time,” say, “God can multiply my moments.”
- Instead of “I’m not qualified,” say, “God equips the called.”
- Instead of “There’s nothing good here,” say, “God is doing a new thing, even in this.”
- Instead of “I am not looking enough”, say, “I am wonderfully made in the image and likeness of God.”
Scarcity says, “There’s not enough.”
Abundance says, “God is more than enough.”
Your Cup Is Already Half Full
Take a moment today to count your blessings. Literally. List five things God has already done for you. See the cup. Celebrate what is instead of mourning what isn’t.
Remember, the same God who provided manna in the wilderness is also the God who led His people into a land “flowing with milk and honey.” And He hasn’t changed.
The Promised Land may not be a physical place for you, it might be peace of mind, restored purpose, financial healing, or clarity in a relationship. But to get there, your thinking must shift first. God is calling you out of the wilderness. Will you let Him transform your mindset?
You’re not stuck.
You’re being shaped.
You were MADE FOR MORE.
